General Rules
The Flower Show is staged in Floral Hall,
Carson Park Fair Grounds in Paducah, Kentucky, June 25-30, 2007. Exhibits will
be accepted as indicated at the heading of each division. The show is open to
the public for viewing Monday through Saturday, 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. A $2.00 general
admission ticket to the Fair is required to view the show. There is no fee
for entering the Horticulture or Design Divisions.
Eligibility
Adult and Youth Divisions are open to all
McCracken County residents, Purchase Area Master Gardeners and McCracken County
Extension Homemakers. FFA, DECA, FCCLA and 4-H members must be certified by
their Advisors or Extension Leaders to be eligible to enter. Youth sections are
open to exhibitor ages 5 years to 17 years. Entries will close promptly
at specified times. Late entries will not be judged but may be included for
display.
Removal
Any exhibits or ribbons not removed at the proper time
indicated for each show will be disposed of unless other arrangements have been
made with the Chairs. Ribbons and premium monies will be forfeited if not
picked up at the designated time.
Responsibility
The McCracken County Fair will not be responsible
for loss or damage to exhibits or personal property of exhibitor, but will
exercise the utmost care for the protection of all exhibits.
Judging
Judging is by nationally accredited Flower
Show Judges, accredited Society Judges and/or Horticulture Experts.

IN ORDER THAT EXHIBITIONS MAY
OPEN PROMPTLY, ALL EXHIBITORS MUST LEAVE THE EXHIBITION FLOOR AS SOON AS THEIR
EXHIBIT IS PLACED AND REMAIN OFF THE FLOOR UNTIL JUDGING IS COMPLETED.
DIVISION I
Horticulture Division
Horticulture exhibits
shall be received between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 25.
Entry cards are available at
day of registration.
All specimens must be correctly named with binomial name. Common name may
be added.
Exhibitors are responsible for obtaining the binomial name of their entries
PRIOR to bringing them to the show.
All horticulture specimens must be fresh plant material grown by the exhibitor
and in the exhibitor's possession for no fewer than 90 days.
ALL ENTRIES MUST BE CLERKED
IN BY 11:30 a.m.
Judging begins at 1:00 p.m.
Cut Plant Material, Container Plants and
Hanging Baskets must be removed Thursday, June 28, between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00
a.m. If not picked up, they will be discarded unless other arrangements
have been made with the Chairs.
Prizes in Horticulture, both for adult and
youth, shall be awarded on the Danish System (judged against perfection) using
Blue, Red and White Ribbons. Premium money will be distributed as follows:
Blue Ribbon: $6.00; Red Ribbon, $4.00; and White Ribbon, $2.00. Ribbons
and premium monies will be distributed Monday, July 2, between 7:30 a.m. and
10:30 a.m. Premiums will be forfeited if not picked up at the designated time.
Sweepstakes - $15.00
Purple Rosette Ribbon
Sweepstakes will be awarded in Horticulture/Adult classes only to the exhibitor
receiving the most blue ribbons for entries submitted on Monday only.
Best of Show - $15.00 Blue
Rosette Ribbon
Best of Show will be awarded in
Horticulture/Container Plants and Hanging Baskets and Horticulture/Cut Plant
Material in Adult classes only. Only entries submitted on Monday are
eligible for Best of Show consideration.
Grooming Tables
Tables
will be set up on the exhibition floor while entries are being accepted. The
Horticulture Committee will supply bottles and water for cut plant material.
Exhibitors must supply their wedging material of choice.
All horticulture specimens must be fresh plant
material grown by the exhibitor a minimum of 90 days. Container-grown
plants must have been in exhibitor’s possession at least 90 days, except for
multiple plantings, which must have been in exhibitor’s possession at least six
weeks. Cut plant material must be
of the appropriate length for the variety. All plant material shall be in
a clean container (where applicable) and disease and pest free. All
specimens must be named, giving genus and species, when these are not already in
schedule: Variety/cultivar added when available; common name may be added
Exhibitors shall not display cut plant specimens with foliage below water level.
All Container Plants and Hanging Baskets must have a saucer under them.
Double potting (placing pot with drainage hole inside another, e.g. jardinière)
is permitted. Exhibits shall consist of one (1) plant per container,
except Hanging Baskets with one or more plants, one variety. Exhibits may
be either foliage plants or flowering plants. Hanging Baskets must be
light enough in weight for display on ceiling hooks or overhead pole. Entries failing to
satisfy these requirements will not be judged as horticulture but may be
displayed.
Entries will be judged on the following:
Cultural perfection; Conditioning and Grooming; Distinction; and Correct,
complete name, neatly written.

horticulture entries. All
horticulture must be grown by the exhibitor for a minimum of 90 days.

DIVISION II
Design Division
Flower Arranging is defined
as the art of organizing those Elements of Design with the plant materials and
other components, according to the principles of Design, to attain the following
attributes: beauty, harmony, distinction and expression.
Elements
of Design - Light, Space, Line, Form, Size, Pattern, Texture and Color
Principles of Design - Balance, Proportion, Rhythm, Contrast, Dominance
and Scale
1. Please read the general rules.
2. Emphasis is on fresh plant material.
3. Some plant material must be used in every exhibit.
4. All designs must be pre-registered. Deadline to
register is June 14th. Call Carolyn Roof at
270/554-4466 or the McCracken County
Extension Office at 270/554-9520.
5. An exhibitor is permitted only one (1) entry per class, but
may enter more than one class.
6. Plant material does not necessarily have to be grown by the
exhibitor.
7. Designs must be the original work of one exhibitor with the
exception of Class III.
8. Design Division should encourage the use of fresh plant
material. Fresh plant material may not be
used if it has been dyed or treated in any
manner other than clipped, stripped, bent, or otherwise
manipulated. Plant material may be
fresh, dried or a combination.
9. Fresh plant material must be in water or conditioned.
10. Any non-perishable food products are also allowed, but
must be sealed if the possibility exists for
attracting insects or producing
undesirable odor.
11. Taxidermal representation from the animal kingdom, e.g.
mammals, birds, fish, etc., is not
permitted in competitive
designs, but other such items that simulate animals or birds, for
example, that are manufactured
or crafted as toys or decorative items are allowed.

The number of exhibits per
class is limited to four unless otherwise specified. Once classes are
filled,
other exhibitors wishing to enter will be placed on an alternate list.
Exhibitors pre-
registering a design must fulfill their commitment.
If designer is unable to fulfill assignment, it is
the designer's responsibility
to find a replacement.

Designs shall be displayed on a
table 30 inches high with space for each exhibit to be 30 inches
wide and 30 inches deep unless otherwise noted. Tables will have white
coverings provided by
Flower Show Committee. Backgrounds,
and background materials, underlays and accessories,
provided by the exhibitor, are permitted unless otherwise
noted. Background tri-fold foam core
boards (36” high x 24” wide) may be
borrowed from the Show Committee.

The official American flag and other national flags
are not permitted to be used within
any
design in a Standard Flower Show. Furthermore, the use of any official national
flag as an
underlay, background, skirting, draping, etc. is also prohibited throughout all
divisions of
the Standard Flower Show.
Designs are judged by the National Garden Clubs,
Inc. System of Awarding. The purpose for the Standard System of Awarding
is to encourage high quality exhibits and to insure fair and objective
evaluation of all exhibits.
