FEATURED SPEAKER BIOS:
Gordon Hayward will soon celebrate his 30th anniversary as a garden designer, writer and lecturer. He's written six books and more than 50 articles teeming with practical gardening and design advice for Horticulture and Fine Gardening magazines. In Your House, Your Garden, winner of the 2004 American Horticultural Society's Book Award, Gordon teaches homeowners to disguise common landscape problems such as awkwardly placed telephone poles and air conditioning units. In The Intimate Garden, Gordon and his wife Mary trace the 25-year development of a 1.5 acre garden around their home in southern Vermont. The garden has been featured eight times on tours lead by Horticulture magazine, The Garden Conservancy, Longwood Gardens and the Chicago Botanic Garden. A highly sought after speaker, Gordon works with residential clients around the nation. At Dream, Draw, Dig!, Gordon will present a practical design lecture based on Your House, Your Garden. His 10:00 a.m. presentation will assist homeowners in creating spaces along the front, sides and back of the home as well as in courtyards, between buildings and around small buildings such as garden sheds. Sponsored by James Sanders Nursery
For Dream, Draw, Dig!, Judy has selected the topic "Consider the Leaf: Foliage as a Foundation for Garden Design." She takes the stage at 1:00 p.m. Sponsored by Eads, Inc. Landscape & Garden Center Garden Gurus IX features programs by Glattstein and Hayward, plus a garden shop with plants, books, tools, apparel and garden-themed merchandise, a silent auction, a live auction of specimen plants and a full roster of Extension Specialists focusing on garden design. Direct inquiries to kentina@copper.net NEED MORE CONVINCING THAT GARDEN GURUS IX IS FOR YOU? 1. It’s a “daylong celebration of gardening” in the dead of winter. Most of us recover from the holiday rush around mid-January, just about the time garden catalogs for the new year begin appearing in mailboxes. Garden Gurus IX will get you up-to-speed on the latest gardening trends and the newest plants so you can design your 2007 landscape with confidence and gusto. 2. Garden Gurus is a novel approach to distributing gardening info in Kentucky. Since 1999, Purchase Area Master Gardeners have grown a lecture series and plant auction into a full day of gardening activities. We have stayed true to our mission of bringing nationally known horticulturists to Western Kentucky so area residents can learn what is happening around the nation and incorporate the best ideas into local landscapes. As the popularity of the series has grown we have added opportunities to purchase garden-themed merchandise including specimen plants, lawn ornaments, apparel, flower arranging items, tools, books and art. 3. It’s a terrific THANK YOU. As the holidays approach you may be looking for a unique gift or stocking stuffer for clients, friends and/or family members. A Gurus ticket is a great gift. It's also a good excuse to get together with friends and family after the hustle and bustle of the holidays and share your garden dreams for the coming season. How about scheduling a “Girls Day Out” or a “Date with Dad.” Gardeners, whether novice or veteran, and those who just appreciate the green thumbs of others, will all enjoy the gift of a Garden Gurus ticket for many growing seasons to come. 4. You’re investing in our community. The Purchase Area Master Gardeners Association is a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status. We are volunteers trained in research-based horticulture by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. We assist the McCracken County Horticulture Extension Agent in serving the gardening public. Proceeds from Garden Gurus support educational endeavors of the Purchase Area Master Gardeners such as the Demonstration & Trial Garden on Coleman Road in Paducah. PAMGA has been recognized TWICE by the National Garden Club as having the Best Garden Center in America. In 2006, the “Plant a Seed” curriculum we created to teach horticulture to elementary and middle school students received the national Youth Horticulture Education Award. Other PAMGA activities include sponsorship of a standard flower show during the McCracken County Fair; plant clinics at Paducah's Farmer's Market; teaching vegetable and flower gardening to Easter Seals Adult Volunteers; maintaining a Speaker's Bureau for civic clubs; and, participation in Ag Day, a farming showcase for all third graders in Paducah and McCracken County. 5. It's THE place to be on January 20, 2007. Garden Gurus enjoys an excellent reputation with gardeners throughout the Purchase Area and indeed the four-state region. Our speakers are impressed too and have sung our praises from coast to coast! Catch the excitement. Tickets are limited and going fast. Order yours today!
