It's a bargain at just $10.00 for three
informational and inspirational lectures by two terrific speakers (Dr. Tom
Barnes and Dr. Dwayne Estes) AND a heart-healthy lunch! For added incentive,
the price of admission also includes entry to the standard flower show, WINTER
IMAGES, created by PAMGA in conjunction with Perennial Gardeners. The action
gets underway at
12:30 in the Heart Center Auditorium at Western Baptist Hospital.
Featuring
Kentucky native plants and wildlife, their environments, and
incorporating/managing them into the landscape: Dr. Tom Barnes with
University of Kentucky.
Dr. Barnes will be selling and signing copies of
four of his books including Kentucky's Last Great Places and Rare
Wildflowers of Kentucky. PAMGA will be selling books, tools and garden
essentials - we still have a few Wallace Wrabbits for sale.
Dr. Dwayne Estes is Assistant Professor of
Plant Taxonomy and the
Curator of the Herbarium
at Austin Peay State University
in Clarksville, Tennessee.
He is a native of
Giles County, Tennessee and a recent graduate of the
University of Tennessee at
Knoxville. Dr. Estes has extensively studied the flora and vegetation
of the southeastern United
States for nearly 17 years. Much of his work has focused on the plants
and plant communities associated with various types of rock outcrops, barrens,
and prairies. He is also currently active in describing several plant species
new to science and preparing a guide to the flora of
Tennessee. Additionally, Dr. Estes is very involved in the study
and documentation of threatened and endangered plants of the Southeast as well
as invasive exotic species. At "The Nature of Life" in
Paducah, Kentucky, Dr.
Estes will deliver a presentation entitled "The prairies, barrens, and glades
of western Kentucky and
Tennessee: an overview of their current status, distribution, and
flora."
The Hort Line is available throughout the growing season, call 270/554-9520 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each Thursday to discuss questions about plants, bugs, weeds & seeds with a trained Master Gardener. The Hot Line coordinators, are armed with a telephone and a computer to research calls from the gardening public. Monthly Meetings are held on first Tuesdays of each month.
